Abuja Varsity expels 100 students and suspends 11 students over examination malpractices

72 of the expelled were undergraduates and 28 were postgraduate students

27 of the undergraduates were 400 level students, 19 in 300 level, 16 in 200 level and 2 in 100 levels

47 from Faculty of Science; 23 from Faculty of Management Sciences and 20 from Faculty of Social Sciences

No fewer than 100 students has been expelled and 11 others suspended by the Senate of University of Abuja for their involvement in examination malpractices.

A statement issued by the university signed by Dr Habib Yakoob, the Head of its Information and Public Relations, said that 72 of the expelled students were undergraduates whereas the remaining 28 were postgraduate students. 5 of the students were suspended for one academic session, 3 suspended for one semester and the remaining 3 were discharged.

Dr Habib Yakoob held that the University Senate considered recommendations of the Examinations Committee of the institution at its 174th Regular Meeting held on November, 2019 and approved the disciplinary actions.

While giving more detailed on the affected students, the University’s Head of its Information and Public Relations revealed that 27 of the undergraduates were 400 level students, 19 in 300 level, 16 in 200 level and 2 students in 100 level.

The breakdown also revealed that the Faculty of Science had 47; Faculty of Management Sciences had 23 while Faculty of Social Sciences had 20 of the expelled students, according to Dr Yakoob.

He said that the affected students had since been directed to handover any university property in their possession, including identity cards, to their department and unit heads and had also been advised to vacate the campus immediately.

The University through Dr Yakoob said that the university was dogged to implant academic discipline among its staff and students, adding that those who debased the rules and regulations of the institution would be disciplined appropriately.

Not more than one week ago, Prof Adeniji Abiodun of Animal Science Department of the university was sacked by the institution for having an inappropriate relationship with a female student. Another lecturer, Prof Agaptus Orji of the Department of Science and Environmental Education was also dismissed over alleged forgery of academic records, while two other professors were demoted over acts of misconduct.
