- Ten (T) = 1 Zero
- Hundred (H) = 2 Zeros
- Thousand (Th) = 3 Zeros
- …up to Billion (B) = 9 Zeros. This mnemonic device simplifies the conversion process, ensuring accuracy in high-pressure exam environments like the WASSCE or AIME.
From Figure to Words: A Step-by-Step Approach
Converting a figure like 10,907,045,619 into words can seem daunting. However, by assigning Place Values (PVs) to digits in groups (Billions, Millions, Thousands, Units), the process becomes mechanical and error-free.
- Identify the Base PVs: Locate the Billions, Millions, Thousands, and Units.
- Group the Digits: Treat every three digits as a distinct group.
- Apply the Trick: Read the Digit/Number Value and append the Place Value name. Result: “Ten billion, nine hundred and seven million, forty-five thousand, six hundred and nineteen.”
From Words to Figure: The Reverse Engineering
Conversely, writing “Seven million, four hundred and sixteen thousand…” in figures requires listening for the “Base PVs” (Million, Thousand).
- Write the Base PVs first (B, M, Th, H, TU).
- Fill in the digits corresponding to the words.
- Fill empty spaces with zeros. This method aligns with the British Standards and Common Core requirements for numerical fluency.
