United Nations Day Celebrations on October 24 every year

United Nations Day is celebrated on October 24 every year, to commemorate the day on which the Charter of the United Nations, the organization’s founding document, came into force in 1945. All member states of the United Nations are bound by the Charter.

The United Nations serves as a platform to promote understanding between countries and strengthen cooperation for effective efforts to address major challenges that transcend borders, from climate change to terrorism to pandemics. The organization’s mission is to build a more peaceful, just, and prosperous tomorrow for all.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres said Thursday that 76 years ago, the UN was created as a “vehicle of hope for a world emerging from the shadow of catastrophic conflict. Today, the women and men of the UN carry this hope forward around the globe.”

Expo 2020 Dubai will celebrate United Nations Day as an Honor Day with a variety of official events on October 24.

United Nations (UN): History and Significance

The United Nations is an intergovernmental organization that aims to maintain international peace and security and develop friendly relations among nations. The organization plays an important role in achieving international cooperation and being a center for harmonizing the actions of nations.

 The name `United Nations` was coined by former United States President Franklin D Roosevelt.

 The UN has six organs. While the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council, the Trusteeship Council and the Secretariat are based at UN Headquarters in New York, the sixth, the International Court of Justice, is located at The Hague in the Netherlands.

 At the time of its founding, the United Nations had 51 member states. It currently has 193 Member States.

United Nations Day 2021: Theme – ”Disarmament Towards Building Back Together for Peace and Prosperity”

The United Nations along with the participating countries and NGOs will in this year’s theme propagate the idea of humanity, protecting civilians, promoting sustainable development, fostering confidence and trust among participating nations in the theme ‘Disarmament to help prevent Armed Conflicts’’

This week, in marking the celebrations, the protection of the people from the harm of weapons will widely be promoted in this year’s team in order to create a safer and secure world.

United Nations Day is usually marked by a concert held in the General Assembly Hall of the Organization at its headquarters in New York. This year, the UN Day Concert has a hybrid format with live and pre-recorded performances. Held on October 21 (Thursday) with the theme “Building Back Together for Peace and Prosperity”. The concert was sponsored by the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Korea to the United Nations.

1. At the time of its founding, the United Nations had 51 member states. It currently has 193 Member States. There were 45 members at the end of World War 2

2. The two countries that are not UN members are Vatican City (Holy See) and Palestine. Both are considered non-member states of the United Nations, allow them to participate as permanent observers of the General Assembly, and are provided access to UN documents

3. The first UN session took place at Methodist Central Hall in London on 10 January  1946.

 4. South Sudan is a new member of the United Nations. He joined the intergovernmental organization in July 2011.

 5. The United Nations has six official languages: English, Spanish, French, Chinese, Russian, and Arabic.

 6. The United Nations, its agencies, related agencies, programs, funds, and its personnel have received the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize more than 10 times.

 7. The longest speech at the United Nations was delivered by Indian politician Vengalil Krishna Kurup Krishna Menon in 1957. Menon spoke for almost eight hours while defending India’s position in Kashmir.

 8. In 1965, Indonesia announced its intention to leave the United Nations. However, a year later, the country declared that it would resume full cooperation with the organization.

 9. UN Declaration is considered the most important achievement. It states that “all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.” The document goes on to list civil and political rights to which everyone is entitled.

10. There are 17 Specialized Agencies of the United Nations. They are
