10 Physical Symptoms and Effects of Stress


What stress is and what stress is not


Different people interpret stress and stress response in different ways in the context ‘Healthy Lifestyle and Wellness Living’ and they believe that the symptoms differ markedly among different categories of people. Whatever they think or believe, stress is the real or perceived body’s reaction to situations that are harmful. A body chemical reaction (referred to as stress response) occurs in that one acts in a way to prevent injury when one feels threatened.


Good and Bad Stress


Stress and its symptoms can help one accomplish tasks and prevent one from getting hurt. Some people are better able to handle stress than others.  Indeed, not all stress is deemed harmful. For example, stress is what gets you to slam on the breaks to avoid hitting the car in front of you. That’s a good thing.

Not all stress is bad. In a dangerous situation, stress signals and responses help the body to function in preparation for such circumstances. In these situations, your pulse quickens, you breathe faster, your muscles tense, and your brain uses more oxygen and increases activity.


Symptoms and Effects of the Stress response


There are several effects during the stress response. These includes

  1. Increase in heart rates
  2. Quickened breathing
  3. Tightened muscles
  4. Risen blood pressure

These effects will make the person act immediately to protect oneself


Physical Symptoms and Effects of Stress


Physical symptoms and effects of stress include:

1. Aches and pains in chest and muscles and rapid heartbeat

2, Headaches

3. Troubled stomach, including diarrhea, constipation, and nausea

4. Nervousness and shaking, ringing in the ear, cold or sweaty hands and feet

5. Dry mouth and difficulty swallowing

6. Clenched jaw and grinding teeth

7. Poor energy level

8. Insomnia

9. Regular colds and infections

10. Loss of sexual desire and/or ability
