A popular footballer is a ‘course of study for The General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) Media Studies students

 

Marcus Rashford, the English national football player, has successfully used social media to promote his campaigns on child food poverty and pupils’ access to books.

AQA hopes that the inclusion of the soccer star on the course will enable pupils to study his use of social media as a way of influencing, learn about the social and racial issues he raises.

He was listed among TIME’S 100 Most Influential Personalities in the world in 2021, got an MBE Award in the 2020 Queen Elizabeth’s Birthday Honours List. and the youngest person to top the Sunday Times Giving List by raising £20 million in donations 

 

A popular footballer has become a course of study for The General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) Media Studies students as a new addition to the GCSE course, according to a news media report

The popular footballer, Marcus Rashford will now be studied as a course by GCSE media studies students following his charity work and stance against racism.

Examination board AQA’s addition of Marcus Rashford to the syllabus from this month following his influence on social issues during the pandemic. is part of the exam board’s commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion.

AQA is also setting up an expert group to consider representation in the curriculum and assessment

The Manchester United Football soccer star, launched a campaign to persuade the Government to provide free meals to vulnerable pupils in England throughout the school holidays during the pandemic, forcing a series of Government U-turns. He received free school meals himself.

Marcus Rashford, the English national football player, has successfully used social media to promote his campaigns on child food poverty, as well as ensuring all pupils have access to books.

He became the youngest person to top the Sunday Times Giving List by raising £20 million in donations from supermarkets for groups tackling child poverty and was listed among TIME’S 100 Most Influential Personalities in the world in 2021. The 23-year old attacking soccer player was made an MBE in the delayed 2020 Queen Elizabeth’s Birthday Honours List.

It is hoped the inclusion of the footballer on the course will enable pupils to study his use of social media as a way of influencing, but it will also enable them to learn about the social and racial issues he raises.

Sandra Allan, AQA’s head of curriculum for creative arts, said she was really excited by the inclusion of the football star in the course of study, claiming it was engaging and relevant and would inspire and motivate the younger General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) Media Studies students

“Marcus Rashford is one of the most influential and inspirational young people in the UK, so students can learn a huge amount from how he uses social media to make a real impact’’, she said.
