In a similar report, the global number of people with dementia increased to 43.8 million in 2016, an increase of 117% compared with 20.3 million in 1990. (GBD 2016 Dementia Collaborators2019). More specifically, the mortality rate (per 100,000 population) in 1994 was 1.76 and reached 5.67 in 2019.

Parkinson’s disease and other neurodegenerative diseases have a significant global impact in terms of both human suffering and healthcare costs. While treating neurodegenerative diseases places a substantial burden on healthcare systems globally –considering the cost of providing medical care, medications, reduced quality of life and support for individuals with these conditions is considerable, the physical and cognitive impairments associated with neurodegenerative diseases can be emotionally and psychologically distressing.

Caregivers and family members of individuals with neurodegenerative diseases may experience increased stress and mental health issues due to the challenges of providing care and witnessing the decline of their loved ones.

Beyond healthcare costs, there is a broader economic impact due to lost productivity as patients may become unable to work, and caregivers often need to reduce their working hours or leave the workforce to provide care.

How Dragon Fruit-based Dietary and Nutritional Approach Can Contribute to Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases Prevention and other Neurodegenerative Diseases

Dragon fruit can be a part of a dietary and nutritional approach that may contribute to the prevention of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. While no single food can guarantee prevention, a diet rich in specific nutrients and antioxidants has the potential to support brain health. Here’s how a dragon fruit-based approach can help:

  1. Antioxidant Protection: Dragon fruit is rich in antioxidants, particularly vitamin C and carotenoids like beta-carotene. Antioxidants help protect brain cells from oxidative stress and damage, which is believed to be a contributing factor in neurodegenerative diseases. They may reduce inflammation in the brain and support overall cognitive function.
  2. Fiber for Gut Health: Dragon fruit contains dietary fiber, which can support gut health. Emerging research suggests a strong link between the gut and brain health. A healthy gut microbiome can help reduce inflammation throughout the body, potentially protecting against neurodegenerative diseases.
  3. Vitamins and Minerals: Dragon fruit provides essential vitamins and minerals, including vitamin B, vitamin C, and iron. These nutrients are vital for overall health and can play a role in cognitive function. For example, vitamin B is associated with brain health and cognitive development.
  4. Low in Unhealthy Fats and Sugars: Dragon fruit is a low-fat and low-sugar fruit, making it a healthy option for those concerned about dietary factors that can contribute to neurodegenerative diseases. Diets high in unhealthy fats and added sugars have been linked to a higher risk of these conditions.
  5. Hydration and Electrolyte Balance: Dragon fruit has a high water content, which can help with hydration. Proper hydration is essential for brain health. It helps maintain the balance of electrolytes necessary for optimal nerve function.
