What is stress and why do its symptoms matter?

Stress is the real or perceived body’s reaction to situations that are harmful. A chemical reaction (known as a stress response or “fight-or-flight,”) occurs in your body that allows you to act in a way to prevent injury when ONE feels endangered.
Effects of the Stress response
There are several effects during a stress response – heart rate increased heart rates, quickened breathing, tightened muscles, and risen blood pressure. These effects will make the person act immediately to protect oneself.

Stress comes in many forms and produces many symptoms and effects – emotional, physical, mental, cognitive, and behavioural.
Mental effects and symptoms of stress are
- Worry
- Irritability
- Restlessness
- Insomnia
- Anger and
- Hostility, or sensations of dread and foreboding,
- Panic.
