A new finding to reduce air pollution has been carried out with 3000 primary school children in London and Luton. The idea was to find out if reduction in air pollution can provide health benefits in London’ s new Ultra Low Emission Zone

Growing children who are exposed to air pollution are likely to suffer from reduced lung growth and damaged internal organs and growing children in London are developing smaller lungs and asthma caused by toxic air pollutants, efforts to reduce fumes from London City’s traffic notwithstanding.

A new finding of more than 2000 children in London discovered that more reduction in air pollution is needed to improve the health of children even though keeping polluting cars away in The Low Emission Zone has slightly improved air quality.

Experts lauded the initiative to launch ultra-low emission zone next year introduced by Mayor of London, Sadiq Kahn, since new findings showed that more productive measures are needed to tackle air pollution crisis in Britain.

An estimated 4 million people including children die yearly of outdoor air pollution from cars and other sources.

“We are raising a generation of children reaching adulthood with stunted lung capacity,” said Professor Chris Griffiths from Queen Mary University of London, one of the study’s authors.

Professor Chris Griffiths further blamed governments and the car industry for continuously failing to enforce regulations to ensure town and cities reduce traffic.

10 years ago, London introduced the world’s largest low emission zones restrict to discourage the use of more vehicles in some parts of the city.

European Union had set nitrogen dioxide pollution limits and scientists enrolled some years ago from Tower Hamlets, Hackney, Greenwich and the City of London are yet to find a breakthrough in meeting current air pollutant limit.

Children exposed to air pollution who were studied by the scientists over the 5-year period of introduction of the Low Emission Zone were reported to have lost 5% of their lung capacity.
