Nigerian students at the University of Arkansas recently held an event to give their American host community the opportunity to experience the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
Nnamdi Ezike, a Nigerian Ph.D. student at the school shared the photos and videos of the event on his Twitter handle.
He said in the post that they were recreating the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) experience – the parades, orientation camp drills, mammy markets. This was to give the host community a viable scheme as experienced by youth service corp members in Nigeria.
The students had exciting experiences after enjoying participating in recreated NYSC undertakings which included camp paramilitary drills, mammy market operations, tug of war, cultural presentation, passing out parade, among others.
The events coincide with the recent statement credited to the Nigerian leader, President Muhammadu Buhari about the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme when he received NYSC members who visited him at the presidential villa in Abuja, the nation’s capital.
The president in supporting its continuity, labeled the scheme as worthy one that should be sustained because it is a way of integrating youths in Nigeria through gaining a better understanding of the country.
The recreation experience was sponsored by the University of Arkansas’ International Students and Scholars; Center for Multicultural and Diversity Ed; Diversity and Inclusion; Walton College of Business Diversity and Inclusion; IDEALS Institute; Fulbright Diversity and Inclusion; African and African American Studies and the Graduate School and International Education.
