About the Seasonal Workers Visa Program

Seasonal work visa program comes amid concerns over food security in the country. The seasonal work visa emerged from the U.K.’s exit from the European Union. Before Brexit, U.K. farmers and food producers could rely on a steady supply of European laborers to work their farms. Once the U.K. left however, that supply disappeared and the then-Conservative government implemented the seasonal work visa program to recruit people from further afield. It was initially temporary but has been extended several times. The top advisory body on migration to the U.K. government has described the country’s seasonal agricultural labour programme as critical to the nation’s food security.

When the scheme was first introduced, British citizens didn’t typically want to do the work and even till now because it is labour-intensive. Anyone who’s worked on a farm can tell you it is backbreaking work. It is also insecure, as workers are only needed during certain parts of the year, typically harvest season. Foreign migrant workers are therefore brought in to fill the significant gaps.

The current programme, the Seasonal Worker Scheme, or SWS, was kicked off in 2019 and has expanded since then. It was accompanied by the similar Seasonal Work Visas scheme for the poultry sector a few years later. While the scheme’s extension was in doubt for a number of years, amid growing opposition to migration among sectors of U.K. politics, it was renewed for another five years in the first half of 2024.
