What are Canada Work Permits?

Canada Work Permits are legal documents issued by the Canadian government that allow foreign nationals to work in Canada for a specific period. These permits are granted based on various categories, such as temporary workers, students, post-graduates, international agreements, and more. Work permits specify the terms and conditions of employment, including the employer, the location, and the type of work allowed.

Work permits are a crucial component of Canada’s immigration system, as they regulate the entry and employment of foreign workers in the country.

Canada offers work permits for temporary workers, businessman, student, or for International Experience Canada Program (Youth) Visa, live-in caregivers, and permanent residency.

As a temporary worker or a live-in caregiver, you can get a bridge work permit by extending your work permit or changing the conditions on your work permit or restore your status. Temporary workers can as well change employers, become a permanent worker, or re-enter Canada by applying for a change in their work permits.

Canada temporary foreign workers who were granted a work permit for a period of time may need to change their work permit before they can start working for a different employer.

If you’re already in Canada under the Live-in Caregiver Program (LCP) and your employment situation changes, you can change employers and stay in the program. If you’re not in the LCP and you’re a caregiver with a regular work permit, find out how to extend or change the conditions of your work permit.

International students can work (on campus, off campus, co-op, and post-graduation) while they study – work temporarily while you study or stay permanently in Canada after you graduate as an international student.

As an international student, you can extend a study permit or obtain student work permit while applying to study in Canada as an international student. Extend your study permit and find out about working while you study or after you graduate.

Graduates of certain designated learning institutions are eligible for this work permit with post-graduation work permit (PGWP). Find out if you eligible for post-graduation work permit (PGWP). If you’re not eligible for a PGWP, you may still be able to work in Canada after you graduate through other types of work permits.

Extending or making changes to your International Experience Canada work permit is another way of becoming a Canada permanent resident.

You can get a work permit to stay in Canada after you graduate by applying for permanent residence. After you graduate from your program of studies, you may be able to work temporarily and then change your temporary work permit (status) to permanent status live permanently in Canada.

  1. Temporary Workers Work Permit: These permits are for foreign nationals who have a job offer from a Canadian employer and meet the requirements, allowing them to work in Canada for a specified duration.
  2. Businessman Work Permit: Business people, such as investors and entrepreneurs, can apply for permits under programs like the Start-up Visa and the Provincial Nominee Program, allowing them to establish or invest in businesses in Canada.
  3. Student Work Permit: International students enrolled in Canadian educational institutions can obtain study permits that allow them to work part-time during their studies and full-time during scheduled breaks.
  4. Post-graduate Work Permit: Recent graduates of Canadian institutions can apply for post-graduate work permits, which enable them to gain Canadian work experience after completing their studies.
  5. International Experience Canada Program (Youth Visa) Work Permit: This program offers work permits to young adults from countries that have bilateral agreements with Canada, allowing them to work and travel in Canada for up to two years.
  6. Live-in Caregivers or Caregivers Work Permit: Individuals working as caregivers in private households in Canada can apply for caregiver work permits, which provide them with the opportunity to gain work experience and eventually apply for permanent residency through caregiver-specific immigration programs. The Live-in Caregiver Program (LCP) is closed to new applicants.
  7. Employer-Specific Work Permit: This type of work permit allows foreign nationals to work in Canada for a specific employer and, in some cases, a specific location. To obtain an employer-specific work permit, individuals typically need a job offer from a Canadian employer. The work permit is tied to that employer, and if the worker wants to change employers, they may need to apply for a new work permit or an amendment to their existing one.
  8. Open Work Permit: An open work permit is more flexible and does not require the holder to have a specific job offer or employer. It allows the permit holder to work for any employer in Canada, with some exceptions. Open work permits are often available to individuals in specific circumstances, such as international students, spouses or common-law partners of Canadian citizens or permanent residents, and individuals who have applied for permanent residency in Canada.

Canada Work Permits for Permanent Residency
