Numeration: How to Do Counting in Whole Numbers
Mathematics is the language of the universe, but for many students, that language can sound like gibberish when decimals are involved. Numeration—the art of counting and naming numbers—is a foundational skill required for everything from basic commerce to advanced engineering. Yet, a common stumbling block for students globally, from the classrooms of Lagos to London and New York, is converting decimal numbers from figures to words.
At Eduonwheels, we believe in “Simplified Mathematics.” We don’t just want you to memorize; we want you to understand the logic. In this lesson, we break down Counting Decimal Numbers using three distinct, easy-to-apply tricks that will boost your critical thinking and problem-solving skills for exams like the SATs, GCSEs, JAMB, and WASSCE.
The difficulty usually lies in the “Place Value.” When you see the number 4069, you know it’s “Four thousand and sixty-nine.” But add .325 to the end, and suddenly students freeze. Is it “three hundred and twenty-five”? Or “three tenths, two hundredths…”? And where does the word “and” go?
Confusion arises when students try to memorize rules rather than understanding the structure of the number.
Our latest video lesson introduces a structured approach to eliminate this confusion. We utilize three specific methods (or “tricks”) to ensure accuracy every time.
Trick 1: The WP and DP Count
This is the most robust method for academic exams.
Step 1: Count the WP (Whole Part). Treat the number to the left of the decimal point as a standard whole number.
Step 2: Count the DP (Decimal Part). Treat the numbers to the right as a whole number initially.
Step 3: Identify the Last Decimal Place Value (DDPV). This is the key. If the last digit is in the thousandths place, the entire decimal part is named in thousandths.
Example: 4069.325 becomes “Four thousand and sixty-nine and three hundred and twenty-five thousandths.”
Trick 2: The DDV + PV Expansion
For students who need to understand the value of every digit, we use the Decimal Digit Value (DDV) combined with Place Value (PV).
Instead of grouping the decimal, you read it digit by digit with its specific value.
Example: 871.2604 becomes “Eight hundred and seventy-one and two tenths, six hundredths, zero thousandths, four ten-thousandths.” This method is excellent for building deep conceptual understanding.
Trick 3: The “Point” Method
Used often in casual conversation or rapid data reading, this is the simplest.
Read the Whole Part, say “Point,” and then read the decimal digits individually.
Example: 11508.41 becomes “Eleven thousand, five hundred and eight point four one.”
