Australian scientists have published a finding indicating that ivermectin, a WHO-approved anti-parasitic drug, can destroy coronavirus inside 48 hours of application to infected cell culture in vitro.

The collaborative research work led by Monash University’s Biomedicine Discovery Institute (BDI) with the Peter Doherty Institute of Infection and Immunity showed that ivermectin treatment was top to the erasure of all viral components present in the treated cells.
The study revealed that ivermectin had around a 5,000-fold reduction in coronavirus (COVID-19 viral or SARS-CoV-2) RNA present in the cell culture – reduction rate was by 93% after 24 hours and by 99.8% after 48 hours.
In fact, a single dose could essentially remove all coronavirus RNA (COVID-19 viral RNA) by 48 hours of administering the treatment and the reduction result was even significant enough after 24 hours.
So, could ivermectin prove to be an effective anti-viral for the cure of COVID-19 (coronavirus) infection in people when it undergoes pre-clinical testing and clinical trials? We will find out in a month’s time.
Ivermectin is also being studied as a likely effective treatment for a number of other viruses’ infection, including Zika, HIV and dengue fever
It is on the World Health Organisation (WHO)’s list of essential medicines for the treatment of parasite infections, including head lice, scabies, river blindness, threadworm, and whipworm, among others.
Chloroquine, alongside hydroxychloroquine and other drugs, which have shown the ability to block coronaviruses from infecting cells by in vitro changing the acidity of the cell surface despite its deadly side effects, is currently undergoing clinical trials as potential treatment or cure of the novel coronavirus patients.
Remdesivir, another prospective coronavirus drug that has been described as highly effective in preventing coronaviruses including filoviruses such as Ebola, SARS, and MERS, from replicating, is also presently undergoing speedy clinical trials in the laboratories of many countries.
The same applies to NHC, EIDD-2801, and EIDD-1931, an antiviral drug in various forms that has the potential to treat COVID-19 patients.
The COVID-19 outbreak has infected not less than 1.1 million people globally, resulting in over 61,000 deaths in not less than 70 countries. At present, there is no vaccine or treatment for the disease.
