Education Levels in Ireland are different education stages in the systems of education offered in the Republic of Ireland under the administrative control of the Department of Education

Ireland has a well-established education system with five formal levels of education – preschool and primary school (early childhood education) stages, secondary, further education and training and higher education. Here are the overview of education levels in Ireland:

 

Formal Education Levels

Preschool: Children typically start preschool around the age of 3 and Primary School Education of Early Childhood Education

Primary School: Primary education begins around the age of 4 or 5 and lasts for eight years when the pupils turn 12 or 13. The 8-year primary classes, Year 1 to 8 are Junior Infants (4–5 years), Senior Infants (5–6 years), First Class (6–7 years), Second Class (7–8 years), Third Class (8–9 years), Fourth Class (9–10 years), Fifth Class (10–11 years) and Sixth Class (11–12 years). The student moves to secondary school after sixth class.

Secondary Education:

    • Junior Cycle: This three-year cycle First Year (ages 12–13 years), Second Year (ages 13–14 years) and Third Year (14–15 years) typically starts at the first year and leads to the Junior Certificate Examination after year 3
    • Transition Year (Fourth Year, for ages 15 and 16): An optional year between the Junior Cycle and Senior Cycle focused on personal development and work experience. In some schools, Transition Year is compulsory, in others it is optional.
    • Senior Cycle: A two-year cycle Fifth Year (ages 15–17 years) and Sixth Year [or Final Year] (ages 16–18 years) leads to the Secondary School Leaving Certificate Examination. Students typically take a range of subjects.

Further Education and Training:

    • After completing the Leaving Certificate, students may choose to pursue further education and training through vocational training, apprenticeships, or Post-Leaving Certificate (PLC) courses.

 

Higher Education:
