The two processes require you answer a few questions on the “Determine your eligibility and apply online” survey and you will be given a reference code to apply online.

Confirm your eligibility: As part of the steps required to apply for Canada Temporary Resident Visa, you will required to confirm if you are eligible to apply for the visa

7 Easy Steps on How to Confirm Your Eligibility before Applying

  1. Visit the Government of Canada Immigration and Citizenship website
  2. Click on ‘Immigration’
  3. Click on ‘Visit’
  4. Click on “Find out if you need a visa” to direct you to a survey on ‘’Determine your eligibility and apply online’’ to complete and submit
  5. Complete the survey: You will be required to answer the questions and select the reason for your visit. The questionnaire will analyze your answers and determine whether you need a Temporary Resident visa, whether you are eligible, or not. if you only eligible, then you need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) visa.
  6. Submit your survey to generate a reference code
  7. Save your reference code

If you are eligible for a Temporary Visitor Visa, then the page will direct you to the instructions on how to apply.

Apply for Canada Temporary Resident Visa: This is the second step in applying for Canada Temporary Resident Visas. The application for Temporary Resident Visa can be done through two ways: Online application and In-person Application While you can apply through any of the two ways, online application is much easier and more recommendable to do than in-person application because of the increasing digitalization of visa applications.

7 Easy Steps on How to Apply Online

  1. Create an account: Use the generated reference code to create an account. Creating the account requires opening an account in the same Government of Canada website. You can either open the account through your bank account details or use a Government of Canada login (GCKey)
  2. Login to your new account to start your application.
  3. Apply Online: This requires completing or filling out the online form and submitting it. You will use your reference code to provide answers to online form questionnaire.
  4. Wait for processing of the visa application: The waiting time for Canada Temporary Resident Visas is 16 days for online application (excluding document mailing time) once you submit your application and 20 days for in-person application (excluding document mailing time), but it will take around 3 to 5 days for it to show up on your account
  5. Go for your visa interview: The Canadian Consulate will process the application. If they see it necessary, they will invite you for a visa interview and/or to give your biometric information. If that happens, you must attend the interview at the scheduled time and respond to all the questions honestly. if the Consulate requires an interview or your biometrics, you will have to show up in person even if you applied online. If you did in-person application, then you will have to visit the Consulate multiple times to complete the whole application process.
  6. Submit your passport for stamping and processing: Once your Canada Temporary Resident visa is approved, the notification will show up on your online account or the Embassy will let you know once you complete the interview and you will be required to submit your passport at the Consulate for stamping and processing. For successful interview on online application, the Embassy will send you an email with instructions on where to mail your passport. You must mail the passport and the processing fees, as well as pay for a return envelope. For successful interview on in-person application, you will visit the Embassy and then you will pay the processing fees there and submit your passport to the Consular Officer in person.
  7. Passport processing: The Consulate will process your passport, stamp it, and return to you in person (for in-person applicants) or they mail it back to you (for online applicants). It will take a few days to arrive if it is mailed after processing.
