You can use your iPhone’s camera to translate text in the Translate app. For example, you can translate, notes, signs and symbols. This means you can translate text you find through your iPhone/iPad camera and from images on your iPhone/iPad in the Translate app.

Steps on How to Use Google Translate Images on iPhones and iPads

To use Google Translate to translate text in an image on iPhones and iPads, follow these steps:

  1. Download the App: If you don’t already have the Google Translate app, you can download it from the Apple Store ((for iOS devices).
  2. Open the App: On your iPhone or iPad, open the Translate app after the installation of the app.
  3. Tap on the language options to choose languages: Select the source language (the language of the text in the image) and the target language (the language you want to translate the text into). That is, choose the languages you want to translate to and from. From: Choose a language or tap Detect language. To: Select the language you want the translation in.
  4. Tap ‘Camera’: Under the text box, tap ‘Camera’
  5. Capture an Image: You have two options here:
  • Real-Time Translation: Point your device’s camera at the text you want to translate text through the camera. The Google Translate app will automatically recognize the text and overlay the translation on the live camera feed OR
  • Import an Image: If you already have an image with text, tap the camera icon, and then tap ‘Gallery’ to import an image from your device’s gallery. This is to translate text from an image that has already been captured.

The translation accuracy depends on the clarity of the text. Translation of small, unclear, or stylized text may not be correct

  2. Copy the Translated Text: Once the text in an image is translated, you copy the text. To copy the text, at, choose ‘Copy text’ to copy the text, select the text you’d like to copy at the bottom of the carousel and tap ‘Copy text’
  3. Audio Pronunciation: For many languages, you can tap on the translated text to hear its pronunciation. To listen in audio pronunciation and have the Translate read your translated text, tap ‘Listen
  4. Save or Share the Translation: You can save the translation for future reference or share it with others through various methods, such as messaging or email. To send to ‘Translate Home’ in order to get more information, tap ‘Send to Translate’
  5. Search Translated Text on Google: To search translated text on Google, tap ‘Search’
  6. Translation of Selected Text: You can select sections of an image to translate. To select some section for translation, take the following steps:
  • Open the Translate app on your iPhone or iPad
  • Select the languages that you want to translate to and from. For ‘From’, select a language or tap Detect language at the bottom and for ‘To’, select the language that you want the translation in at the bottom,
  • Tap ‘Camera’
  • Tap ‘Shutter’ button.
  • Tap ‘Translate options’ at the top of the page to expand the settings panel.
  • Turn on ‘Show original text’
  • Tap the word you want select. You can change and select another text for translation.  To change your selection and display the translated text in the card below, drag the selection anchors. Note that you have to drag the card up if f the text is too long to view in the card.
