Azeez Sani, NECO Media Officer, in a signed statement, said that the postponement was necessary to give room for states that have recorded low registration of primary school candidates to enroll their unregistered candidates who are to sit for the examination.
Mr Sani further disclosed that about 70,720 primary school candidates have so far registered for the examination and further advised them to download the new timetable from the council’s website.
In 2015, the NECO’s NCEE into secondary schools earlier scheduled for March 21 was postponed to April 25.
The postponement, at that time, was necessitated by the curiosity of parents about their children’s safety ahead of the general elections rescheduled to hold on March 28 and April 11.
As a result, the Ministry of Education advised and consulted with the council; the outcome of the consultation lead to the postponement. There were also some serious concerns as to whether parents would leave their children in schools with the uncertainties association with the elections.
It was analysed that it would be better to postpone the examination and allow more pupils to sit for the exam in a relaxed atmosphere after the elections than they boycotting the examination because of safety concerns.
The examination body further continued the examination registration process until 18th April.
Primary school candidates who sit for National Common Entrance Examination for admissions into secondary schools are still young children who should not be examined in a tensed atmosphere. The political situation in the country at that time would not allow parents risk their children’s lives because of a federal examination.
