3 million children face malnutrition, 1 of which will die if aids are delayed till March – a former UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs
Baroness Valerie Amos, a former UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, told Sky News that three million children under five would face acute malnutrition by March, of those, a million children will die if money is not sent into the country to help the vulnerable people in accordance with the estimates of The World Food Programme (WFP).
Innocent Afghans including millions of children who have nothing to do with the Taliban regime are facing starvation at the moment.
She added: “We have to find a way of restoring the economy in Afghanistan without getting money into the hands of the Taliban and we have plenty of experience of doing this.”
Sir Mark Lowcock, a former UN under-secretary-general for humanitarian affairs added that while people “are right to be concerned” by the Taliban, the price is being paid by children and innocent women.

UN chiefs call on the UK government to release millions in unspent emergency funding.
Former UN chiefs have warned, calling on the UK government to release millions in unspent emergency funding to prevent the starving Afghan population especially children from dying.
It was reported that Last August, the UK government promised to double aid sent to the country, but just £145 million out of £286 million has been dispersed so far – meaning nearly half the amount remains unspent and the financial year ends in April.
Sir Mark Lowcock called on the government to release the rest of the promised funds. “Where is the rest of that money, what are they waiting for?” he asked.
Afghanistan currently has billions of its own money stuck outside the country, frozen by foreign governments, which he said could be released to pay teachers and health workers directly.

Afghan parents sell their children and kidneys to buy food
The country is so starved, and its population so desperate, parents have resorted to selling their children and organs just to survive.
Foreign Secretary Liz Truss reacted to Sky News’ report from Afghanistan on people being forced to sell their kidneys and children so they can feed their families by saying that the revelations were ‘extremely, extremely concerning’.
“Well they are extremely, extremely concerning and that is why we have upped the level of humanitarian aid into Afghanistan and that is why we are working very hard with partners across the international community to secure peace and stability in Afghanistan,” she said.
Sir Mark Lowcock told Sky News: “The vast majority of the population are starving and that is the reason people resort to these extreme measures’’
Ben Slater, a former British soldier who led an escape effort from Afghanistan after he was stranded in Kabul, said the selling of children has been happening since the fall of Kabul.
“The selling of young girls, for around $200-$300 (£149-240), started immediately, weeks after the takeover,” he told Sky News.
“Most families live day by day, hand to mouth. That has been going on for months.
“The selling of organs is horrific and they are fetching about $3,000 (£2,240) on the black market at the moment.”

Afghan becoming the world’s worst humanitarian disaster – UN
A report from Sky’s correspondent Alex Crawford depicted the horror of life in Afghanistan, a part of the world which, the United Nations said, is becoming the globe’s worst humanitarian disaster.
The UN is seeking £4.4bn to help solve the humanitarian crisis.
Sir Mark Lowcock, a former UN under-secretary-general for humanitarian affairs, told Sky News: “That graphic, compelling, heartbreaking set of stories is really the tip of the iceberg of what’s going on in Afghanistan right now’’
“This is a significant requirement but the good news is quite a lot of it could be funded from Afghanistan’s own resources,” said Sir Mark.
Mr. Slater who runs Nomad Concepts Group and said sending of funds into the country had to be managed carefully by the international community since it wouldn’t want to work with the Talibans nor would it want the funds to get into their hands.
