What is The Killam Fellowship Program (KFP)?

The Killam Fellowships Program (KFP) is a scholarship program that provides an opportunity for exceptional undergraduate students from universities in Canada and the United States to spend either one semester or a full academic year as an exchange student in the other country.

Killam Program Scholarship funding in collaboration with Fulbright Canada

Purpose

The purpose of Killam Fellowship Program is to give undergraduate students from universities in the United States and Canada the opportunity to spend either one semester or a full academic year as an exchange student in Canada.

Amount/Fee/Worth/Cost

$6,000 US per semester cash prize ($12,000 for a full academic year)

  • Fall Orientation in Ottawa, ON
  • Spring Seminar in Washington, D.C.
  • C$800 Mobility Grant*  (On a competitive basis, to be taken up during the exchange period) – All Killam Fellows are also eligible to apply for a mobility (in-country travel) grant in an amount not to exceed $800 Cdn
  • Eligbility for paid internship opportunities for alumni, Fulbright Canada Alumni Internship Program
  • Killam Community Action Initiative grant, and the Fulbright Canada Alumni Internship Program. Grantees can also participate in our Local Ambassador Program that matches current grantees with Killam alumni.
  • The Killam Fellowships Program also offers enrichment opportunities for alumni. In particular, the Fulbright Canada-Maple Leaf Community Action Program allows alumni to apply for a community enrichment grant to complete a volunteer-based project in their home or host communities.

Number of Awards

3 full academic year (or 6 one semester) scholarships in 38 universities and colleges in United States and Canada

Eligibility

  • Be U.S. citizens
  • Be full-time undergraduate students in good standing at a fully accredited degree-granting college or university in the United States
  • Expect to receive an undergraduate degree in the Spring of 2025 or beyond
  • Have met the eligibility requirements of their home university (as they relate to participation in international exchange programs)
  • Be fluent in the English language (and/or French, where appropriate)
  • Have a superior and competitive academic record
  • Complete the application process prior to the published deadlines, and
  • In the case of the direct exchange applicants, be nominated by one’s home university.

 Requirements

  • Application must be either through the direct exchange program (registering at their home university, paying their home fees, and attending the host university as an exchange visitor) or as a self-placed visiting student (registering at the host university and paying host tuition fees) – to the open competition as they see fit.
  • Applicants to the direct exchange program must be registered and in good standing at one of the participating American universities and be planning to take up their award at one of the participating Canadian universities
  • Applicants to the open competition may be students currently enrolled at any degree-granting institution in the United States (including the participating universities) and apply to any degree-granting institution (including the participating colleges and universities) in Canada.
  • Eligibility to apply for a $5,000 Killam Community Action Initiative Grant (Open to grantees and alumni)
