Watch video: Introduction to Numbers: Whole Numbers: The Use of ‘Greater than’, ‘Less than’, and ‘Equal to’ in Ordering Whole Numbers
We can ‘Greater than’, ‘Less than’, and ‘Equal to’ in comparing and ordering whole numbers. The ‘less than’ sign and the ‘greater than’ sign look like a “V” on their side while the ‘equal to’ look like two parallel dashes.
The ‘Greater than’ and ‘Less than’ sign has two arms or lines that converge at a point to form the sign.
When the ‘Greater than’ and ‘Less than’ sign is used to compare and order two numbers, the bigger one is written at the divergent opening of the sign whereas the smaller one is written at the convergent point.
Take for example, when ordering 54, 13, and 68 as a given set of numbers; you place the greater than sign to face 54 and 68.
‘Équal to’ is written between two numbers that are the same or are equal in magnitude.
