According to a report on Friday, the once-rare sexually transmitted infection (STI) disease-causing “red-muscled” boils is spreading across the UK.

 Cases of donovanosis, which causes thick sores that damage genital tissue, have continued to grow in the region since 2016, and cases are expected to increase,  according to data and experts cited by Birmingham Live as reported by Fox News

Dr. Datta, of MyHealthCare Clinic in London, told the outlet that the figures suggest that Donovanosis — which was previously thought to be restricted to places including India, Brazil, and New Guinea — is becoming more common on these shores, even in the UK

Health officials reported 30 cases of sexually transmitted diseases in the UK in 2019, but more infections over the past two years could pose a public health risk, he warned.

STIs are generally transmitted through unprotected sexual intercourse, but in rare cases can be transmitted through non-sexual skin-to-skin contact and to infants through their mothers.

Symptoms of the flesh-eating sexually=trnsmitted infection, according to Healthline.com, .nclude “protruding red bumps,” “broken skin,” and “discoloration of the genital tissue”

 STDs are more common in parts of India, Papua New Guinea, central Australia, the Caribbean, and southern Africa, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

 Long-term treatment, including antibiotics, is required to cure this disease.
