Are we in for worse? – Global COVID-19 Delta Variant deaths are rising sharply

The pace of deaths from COVID-19 rose steeply last week globally, as countries in multiple parts of the world battled surges and people in many nations over the past month and are still rising. US, UK, Russia, Indonesia, Australia, China, India, Africa, and others have reported a surge in cases since last month.

The Delta variant of Covid-19 has now been detected in 124 territories worldwide,  according to the World Health Organization (WHO)

Global COVID deaths last week were up more than 20.6% by the third week in July, with cases increasing by 6.5%, resulting in about 69,000 deaths people across the world – a figure that has increased between then and now. The COVID-19 Delta Variant, first detected in India, is expected to become the dominant variant globally in the coming months, with the WHO predicting that there could be more than 200 million confirmed cases within a matter of weeks.

The U.S. is now averaging about 650 deaths a day, increasing more than 80% from two weeks ago and going past the 600th mark on Saturday for the first time in three months.

Maria Van Kerkhove, Ph.D., the World Health Organization (WHO) technical lead for COVID-19 said, ‘’ Think this pandemic is over? Think again.”
