Google Translate, Google Search, Google Assistant, Google Photos, Google Chrome are of some Google’s products and services related to Google Lens that ring a bell in the ears of numerous tech users but does Google Lens do as much as those? A tech user who is not conversant with such a product might ask, ‘’what is Google Lens?’’, ‘’How does it work?’’, “How can I get, activate or use Google lens in my Android or iPhone?’’

What is Google Lens?

Google Lens is an image recognition technology developed by Google, designed to bring up relevant information related to objects it identifies using visual analysis based on a neural network.

Google Lens – A smartphone and computer device camera technology app search tool

Google Lens is an AI-powered technology search tool that uses your smartphone camera and deep machine learning to not only detect an object in front of the camera lens, but understand it and offer actions such as scanning, translation, shopping, and others. Google Lens represents the cutting edge of camera technology and Google’s implementation of it.

It was first provided as a standalone app, later being integrated into camera apps of various Android phones (Android’s standard camera app).

Knowing how Google Lens works arms you with the idea of how to use it in your mobile phone devices after you activate it. So, how does it work? – is a good knowledge question to ask

The Lens works by using more advanced deep learning routines in order to empower detection capabilities, similar to other apps like Bixby Vision (for Samsung devices released after 2016) and Image Analysis Toolset (available on Google Play).

Google Lens reveals detailed information about an object captured by your phone camera. It points your phone camera at an object, whatever object it might be, and then asks Google Assistant what the object you are pointing at is in order to provide the details about it and make further suggestions o how to get the best of the service of the object.

Given that Google Lens represents the cutting edge of camera technology and Google’s implementation of it; there are constantly small updates and rumoured features for the app on the horizon.

With wide availability on Android devices and on iPhone too, there’s always something to discover with Google Lens both in uses and features.

This ‘text translate’ camera app offers a wide range of features such as scan a book cover to get reviews, summaries, and more info about it; scan texts from the real world; copying texts from photos, scanning QR codes; add an event to your calendar from flier, billboard, or anything that contains dates; saves contact details from a business card; gets historical facts, and other information about business places or buildings; learning of breeds, shapes of objects, and species of an animal, and many more.

Google Lens features ‘point and shoot’ service for automatic Wi-Fi Connectivity

Google Lens features a ‘point and shoot’ service with instantaneous Wi-Fi network connectivity. Now, with Google Lens, you can literally point and shoot.

‘Point and shoot’ service in Google Lens by taking a picture of the SSID sticker on the back of a Wi-Fi router, and automatically connects to the Wi-Fi network whilst typing it in your phone without reading out the password.

Online environment searches

One gets historical facts, open hours, and more info about buildings, bars, and different locations with Google Lens.

Google Lens features impressive search, detection, and recognition of characters, symbols, items, buildings, places, or detailed landmarks everywhere in your environment and surroundings within Google Photos. It lets me do an online search for what I see.

During Google I/O 2019, Google announced four new features. The software will be able to recognize and recommend items on a menu. It will have the ability to also calculate tips and split bills, show how to prepare dishes from a recipe, and can use text-to-speech.

Advantages and Benefits of Google Lens – What can Google Lens do?

Google Lens – Your Search, Recognition and Identification Camera Technology Tool

What can Google Lens do? Google Lens highlights some notable benefits and advantages. Apart from revealing the detailed information or identity of an object in its usage and serviceability, this  AI-powered technology search tool does a lot of other functions including ‘point and shoot’, text search, selection, and translation, shopping as well as both facilitating learn-at-home and work-at-home functionalities.

What we said right above – about pointing your camera to an object or image to get more info about it – is just the tip of the iceberg to what you can do with Google Lens as a tech tool.

Google Lens does Wi-Fi network connections

Google Lens can help you connect to a Wi-Fi network by scanning its QR code or password from the router’s sticker. That solves the problem of imputing passwords manually or even missing them several times in case of an incorrect password.

Smart Text Selection and copying

One of the striking features and benefits of Google Lens also includes its Smart Text Selection. Think of digitizing texts on paper? You can do it straight away with Google Lens. Just point your phone’s camera at the text, or choose an existing picture from your gallery, then highlight and copy the text. This is about camera app-text functionality to avoid typing and retyping texts.

Text reading, translation, copying, and searching

Besides copying the text to your phone, Google Lens can also read it aloud, translate it, copy it to your computer, or search it on Google.

Google Lens selects text to translate and translate text

When text is highlighted on pointing your phone camera to it, Google Lens copied the text to your phone. This feature and function help to collect and store valuable information for future retrieval and use. For example, pointing your phone at a Wi-Fi password and being able to copy/paste it into a Wi-Fi login screen.

Also, Google Lens translates text in both online and offline modes provided the phone is pointed at it. So, once you point your phone’s camera at the text, with the Google text translate plugged in, the text is translated live automatically before your very eyes.

Google Lens enables text search

One of the benefits of Google Lens is that it enables text search with ease. When a text is highlighted in Google Lens, Google search searches that text. This is handy if you need to look up a definition of a word, for instance.

Facilitation of provision of ‘near me’ services

One of the advantages of Google Lens is that it enhances the provision of ‘near me’ service. Google Lens facilitates many ‘near me’ services, impressively recognizing objects like a thumb up emoji, a hand, and others and centers like restaurants, clubs, cafes, hotels, and bars, and others presenting you with a pop-up window showing reviews, address details and opening times.

With your phone’s camera, you can get plenty of info about ‘near me’ objects and places of interest.

Enables easy shopping

Google Lens scans goods, items to shop for, or get similar products for them online and it identifies a piece of item or article like pair of shoes you think of you wish to buy while making reviews and accessing shopping.

Multi-Google apps integration

More so, Google Lens has been integrated into many Google apps like Google Photos, Chrome, Assistant, Camera app, Google Images, and others to make it more accessible.

Google Lens Cons – Problem with and Disadvantages of Google Lens

Google Lens is fast and clever, making you see and understand what objects are, but one of the disadvantages of Google Lens t is that it is not always accurate.

There are a number of different ways Google Lens may stop working that may not be due to design problems or disadvantages. The lens may simply not work the way it’s supposed to and identify objects within images, or it might not even start up and, instead, display an error message of some kind to the user – or one of half a dozen different things. In addition, there is a different cause behind each instance of Lens not working or having

problems.
