A female Nigerian has been named as the winner of Bill Gates’2020 Changemaker award, according to the information released by a national news report.
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation named Hauwa Ojeifo, a gender and disabilities rights activist as its change-maker award winner for 2020.
The 2020 Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Change-maker Award is rewarded to a person who has inspired change using personal experience or from a position of leadership and celebrates an individual who supports progress through a science, technology, digital or business initiative

Hauwa Ojeifo is a sexual and domestic abuse survivor and founder of ‘She Writes Woman’, a women-led movement giving the issue of mental health a voice in Nigeria and was recognized for her work promoting gender equality (a Global Goal #5).
The foundation made the announcement during the Gates Foundation Global Goalkeeper Award won by the director of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (ACDC), Dr John Nkengasong.
The foundation also declared three other goalkeepers awards and launched two inventive partnerships that address the impact of COVID-19 on Kenya’s health and the economy as part of its annual goalkeeping campaign.
Co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Bill Gates, praised Nkengasong and the African Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (ACDC) for their commitment to the fight eradicate the spread of coronavirus in Africa.
Gates said: “Dr. Nkengasong and his team at Africa CDC are deeply deserving of this award. Their commitment to securing the latest innovations from elsewhere in the world—as well as developing them themselves—will go a long way towards ensuring that the continent has the vaccines and medicines it needs to fight COVID-19.”
Two other winners recognized for playing a role in addressing the effects of COVID-19 in their communities also emerged – Bonita Sharma of Nepal, and the MASH Project Foundation based in India In addition to Dr John Nkengasong, and Hauwa Ojeifo.
