At least 6 kids shot by gunmen in Cameroon in a school classroom
At least 6 children were killed in Kumba, the south-western city of Cameroon, and not less than 12 wounded when unknown gunmen stormed a private school and opened fire on them where they were learning in a classroom, according to a news report.
The gunmen stormed the private school – Mother Francisca School around 12 noon Saturday after arriving on motorcycles. The injured kids were said to have jumped from the second floor in an attempt to escape the attack. Videos uploaded to social media show adults running from the school while carrying children.
City sub-prefect Ali Anougou told an international news agency that the gunmen opened fire. The sub-prefect blamed the secessionist insurgents for the attack even though it was not clear why the school was targeted.
However, a secessionist leader said a statement would be released expressing “repugnance” at the killings.
Some parts of Cameroon have been engrossed by turbulence since Anglophone groups stepped up their push for independence in 2016. Protests over the growing use of French in courts and schools in Cameroon’s English-speaking heartlands – the North-West and South-West regions – transformed into violence in 2017.
Some schools which have remained closed for four years in Cameroon’s Anglophone regions due to threats from separation fighters demanding for the independent state of Ambazonia were recently reopened.
Anglophone activists say the country’s French-speaking majority is marginalizing the English-speaking minority.

At least 24 students killed in a bombing at Afghan in an education center
At least 24 students have been killed and dozens of others wounded in a suicide bomb attack outside an education center in the Shia Muslim Dasht-e-Barchi area, Kabul, Afghan capital officials say, according to a news report.
According to the Afghan Interior Ministry, the explosion at the education center occurred late in the afternoon, which usually hosts and offers courses for hundreds of students in higher education.
Tariq Arian, the Afghan Interior Ministry Spokesman, narrated to a news agency that he detonated his explosives in the alley after he was identified by security guards in an attempt to enter the education center thereby killing and injuring students waiting to enter the center.
After the Taliban denied involvement in the attack earlier, the Islamic State group said it was behind the attack in messages posted on its social media channels, but did not provide any evidence.
The UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has expressed “deep revulsion” at the killings in a suicide attack outside an education center, according to the latest report.
Afghanistan has seen a rise in violence in recent weeks – with most of the attacks carried out by the Taliban. The violence threatens to imperil peace talks between government forces and the Taliban in the Qatari capital, Doha.
The Shia community in Afghanistan has previously been targeted by Sunni Muslim extremists such as the Islamic State group, which views the Shia practice of Islam as unorthodox.
