Colin Powell, the first black US secretary of state whose leadership in multiple Republican governments helped shape US foreign policy in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, has died of complications from Covid19, his family said on Facebook. He is 84 years old.
“General Colin L. Powell, former US Secretary of State and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff died this morning of complications from Covid 19,” the Powell family wrote on Facebook, noting that he had been fully vaccinated.
Powell has multiple myeloma, a cancer of plasma cells that suppresses the body’s immune response, as did Parkinson’s, Peggy Cifrino, Powell’s longtime chief of staff, confirmed to CNN. Even if fully vaccinated against Covid19, those whose immunity is compromised are at greater risk of contracting the virus.
“We have lost a wonderful and loving husband, father, grandfather, and American,” the family said.
Powell was a leading and pioneering professional soldier and a trailblazing army general whose career took him from combat service in Vietnam to becoming the first Black National Security Advisor during the end of Ronald Reagan’s presidency and the youngest and first president of African-American Joint Chiefs of Staff under President George HW Bush. His national popularity skyrocketed after the victory of the US-led coalition in the Gulf War, and for a time in the mid-1990s, he was considered the main contender to become the first black president of the United States. But his reputation would be tarnished forever when, as George W. Bush’s first secretary of state, he pushed flawed intelligence before the United Nations in support of the war in Iraq, which he later called a “stain.” on his resume.
