Colleges of education academic staff union threatens strike

Colleges of education academic staff union has threatened to start up a strike following the inability of the Federal Government to honour its agreement. The president of the union Mr. Nuhu Ogirima made this information known through the letter he sent to the Minister of Education Mallam Adamu Adamu in Abuja on Thursday which is made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
The union president in his statement asked for the fulfillment of the commitment in the issue on contention, while call for immediate solutions on the issue.
He noted that the union would be fast to conclude or assume that the present administration are not committed to education especially teachers’ education.
Putting into consideration the current and proposed allocation to colleges of education sub sector and its prevailing non-commitment towards fulfillment of the resolutions reached with the union on issues of industrial concern, the union would be forced to seek immediate corrections.
In 2018, December 5, the union called off a strike it embarked on due to the fact that Federal Government agreed to release the sum of 15 billion as an intervention to curb the effects of the decay in the public colleges of education.
In the meeting of the Rapid Response Team, the permanent Secretary on the payment of Peculiar Academic Allowances (PPA) and the chairman reached an agreement alongside other resolutions.
The resolutions includes: The Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF) to release the union’s cheque of unpaid funds, arrears deducted of accruing from the promotion of academic staff paid between January and December 2018; CONTISS15 on low cadre; renegotiation of (2010COEASU FGN) agreement, amongst others.
It is however disappointing that Federal Government could do nothing even four month after the agreement. The government inability to fulfill these resolutions has increased the concern of the union.
The chairman, therefore concluded that because of the outcome other issues are generating in the colleges of educations, they might be forced to embark on strike if the situation is not addressed immediately.
