Public schools that run in-person classes will remain closed through the end of the academic year in New York City, the US due to coronavirus outbreak.
This information was given by the mayor of New York, Bill de Blasio on Saturday during a news conference even though Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo, the State Governor, said closing schools in the city or state till the end of the academic year has not been decided since he needed to coordinate city public schools date of resumption with the rest of the states.

Since March 16 when the public schools were closed, about 1,800 schools across the city have tried to adjust to distance learning – a present situation that turned not less than a million parents into temporary teachers and changing the relationship between school kids, other students, parents, and teachers in New York City, the largest school district US.
This unexpected adjustment has posed a serious challenge to teachers and educators on how to meet the individual needs of the students. Mr. de Blasio said that the teachers s’ ability to abruptly switch to distance learning would be remembered as one of the “heroic achievements” of the coronavirus outbreak.
If the schools remain closed in New York City up to that time, it would be a grave landmark for the most disrupting moment to US education in a generation.
Mr. Bill de Blasio who claimed sole responsibility to the public school kids, along with the schools’ chancellor, Richard A. Carranza, disclosed that city was preparing to resume public school activities by the next academic year, scheduled in September.
He further said the expected the turn of new education era in New York City would go with the support for school kids to catch up on lost time in classroom teaching and learning even though the supportive efforts may come too late for the graduating high school seniors.
Even though some parents would want the schools reopened during the summer break but the teachers’ union the United Federation of Teachers, stated that it would not support reopening schools in July or August.
The Mayor of New York, Bill de Blasio was forced to close the schools after he faced serious pressure from parents and teachers to close schools early last month as the coronavirus began its spread through the city.
Although New York is the epicenter of the country’s coronavirus outbreak, more than twelve states including California, Pennsylvania, and Washington, have indicated that their public schools would remain closed through the end of the academic year.
