The current COVID-19 (coronavirus) is here to stay. It is a highly transmissible virus that can spread like wildfire, capable of infecting a good number of people in a short time. It can only end with mass immunity. But once a population gets immune, the pandemic ceases to rage ahead as the virus runs into walls of immunity.
It has been asserted that the world has missed the stage at which the virus can be contained just like it was for SARS and MERS.
It is estimated that this pandemic will likely affect more over 3.5 billion people globally resulting in about 3.5 million deaths; 35 million would require medical attention. The infection figure could reach 5 billion. The medical infrastructures in hospitals would be overstretched if these hospitalizations and deaths occur before the vaccine is discovered, leaving no space for the care of people with other medical conditions.
We all should be ready for living a normal life amid the virus pandemic.
If we fail to get the vaccine in the next six months, we should expect prolonged painful times in this first wave of infections.
The strain of the virus that causes a devastating endemic in this first wave of infection will later produce mild seasonal pandemics with decreased infection figure and as susceptible individuals to the infection reduces, subsequent waves of infection weaken until it becomes history. But this might take decades.
So, life would return to normal after this first pandemic and administration of new drugs and intense public health action would help to end the virus infection even if there is no developed vaccine.
If the collective efforts of national governments and international organizations succeed in suppressing surge in the coming weeks in their respective countries without the herd immunity, the virus will surely raise its ugly head once again. In the absence of robust herd immunity at the population level, we have some risk of a second wave of the epidemic
