  1. Preschool Education:
    • Kindergartens in Macau offer early childhood education to children aged 3 to 6. Preschool education, usually in form of infant education in kindergartens, is widely available and attended by many children though it is not compulsory.
  2. Primary (Elementary) Education:
    • Primary (elementary) education in Macau is compulsory for children aged 6 to 12. It consists of a six-year program in primary schools that runs from Primary 1 to 6, similar to elementary education in other countries.
  3. Secondary Education:
    • Secondary education in Macau is divided into two cycles. The first cycle is a three-year junior secondary education program, Forms 1 to 3, (equivalent to middle school) for students aged 12 to 15 in junior secondary schools. The second cycle is a three-year senior secondary education program in senior secondary schools for students aged 15 to 18. Students in Macau-China also have an option to attend Vocational and Technical Education in Vocational Schools as part of the completion of the secondary education.
  4. Tertiary (Higher) Education:
    • After completing secondary education, students have the option to pursue tertiary (higher) education in Macau or abroad. Macau has several institutions offering higher education, including universities, colleges, and vocational schools. The University of Macau is the most prominent institution for higher education in the region. It offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs. Other higher education institutions in Macau that offer tertiary education include the Macau Polytechnic Institute and the City University of Macau.

South Korea places a strong emphasis on education, and its education system is highly regarded for its rigor and high academic standards. The formal education system in South Korea is divided into four levels:

  1. Early Childhood Education:
    • Preschool: This is not compulsory, but many children in South Korea attend preschool from ages 3 to 6. It is an optional stage of education designed to prepare children for primary school.
  2. Primary Education:
    • Elementary School: Primary education in South Korea is compulsory and lasts for 6 years, from ages 6 to 12. Students typically attend elementary school from grades 1 to 6.
  3. Secondary Education:
    • Middle School: After completing elementary school, students move on to middle school, which covers three years (grades 7 to 9). Middle school education is also compulsory.
    • High School: Following middle school, students enter high school, which is not compulsory. South Korea offers various types of high schools, including academic high schools, vocational high schools, and specialized high schools.
  4. Higher Education:
    • Colleges and Universities: South Korea has a highly competitive system of higher education. Students must take the College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT) to gain admission to colleges and universities. Higher education institutions in South Korea offer a wide range of programs, including bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees.
    • Technical and Vocational Education: In addition to traditional higher education, South Korea has a robust system of technical and vocational education, offering programs in various fields to prepare students for specific careers.

Informal Education Levels: Adult Education and Private Education

Adult Education:

    • South Korea encourages lifelong learning, and there are opportunities for adults to continue their education through various programs and institutions.

Private Education:

    • South Korea is known for its extensive private education sector, which includes hagwons (private academies or tutoring centers). Many students attend hagwons in addition to regular school to further enhance their academic performance. However, the reliance on private education has been a subject of debate due to its potential impact on students’ well-being and equality in education.
