Education Minister issues deadline for teachers’ registration

Education Minister of Nigeria, Mallam Adamu Adamu, has issued immediate mandate to teachers who have not registered and licensed under the Teachers Regulatory Council of Nigeria (TRCN) to do so in order to meet December 2019 deadline. The Minister of Education further warned that any teacher failing to do so would not be allowed to tutor in any Nigerian schools.

This immediate stern warning was made known on Thursday by the Education Minister who was duly represented by the Teachers Regulatory Council of Nigeria Registrar, Prof. Olusegun Ajiboye, during the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) Workshop on Privatisation and Commercialisation of Education in the Federal Capital Territory FCT, Abuja.

In his explanation, the Education Minister said that with the position of the National Council of Education (NCE), the TRCN has being authorised to take actions effect by December 2019. The Minister of Education further cautioned that any teacher who does not cooperate by having him or herself registered, licensed and qualified by the Council will be disqualified from being a classroom teacher. That position of NCE would be enforced effectively to the letter.

In that regards, teachers have been giving the opportunity to undergo two professional qualifying examinations effect in May and October 2019. This is for them to receive their certificate of registration and qualification.

As regards the matter of privatisation and commercialisation of schools, he clearly stated that the government cannot carry out the role of funding education alone so the call and encouragement for private participation, stressing the fact that education is not for commercial purpose, being not a commodity. He, therefore, advised that we avoid anything that will emerge to commercialising of education.

TRCN is an agency of the Ministry of Education of Federal Republic of Nigeria established in 2004 with the major aim of regulation and control of the Teaching Profession at all Nigerian Education System levels in both the public and private sectors.
