Facebook to open a Nigerian office before 2020 ends

Facebook VP held a dialogue with the Nigerian VP on the growth and development of Nigeria’s digital economy

Facebook, the social media giant, has said that it will open a Nigerian office before 2020 ends.

Nick Clegg, a former UK Deputy Prime Minister, and other Facebook officials, including Ebele Okobi, Facebook’s Head of Public Policy, Africa, had informed the Vice President about the decision to open the company’s second African office in Lagos before the end of the year, according to the media report.

According to a statement issued by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Office of the Vice President, Mr. Laolu Akande, Professor Osinbajo’s explanation during the fireside chat was however greeted with the news of the plan of the social media giant, Facebook, to open a Nigerian office in Lagos.

Facebook’s Vice President on Policy, Global Affairs and Communication, Nick Clegg, who was a former UK Deputy Prime Minister, held a dialogue with Nigeria’s Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, on Friday on Nigeria’s digital economy and its growth and development potential in which he was expected to ask Nigeria to assist in combating fake news and misinformation on Facebook. The conversation will have focused on the ‘Digital Economic Pillar of Nigeria’s Economic Sustainability Plan (NESP)‘ towards Nigeria’s digital economic growth and development.

Facebook had made a promise to the global community to checkmate the spreading of unconfirmed fake news and misinformation on the giant social networking company.

It would be recalled that Nigerian VP, Prof Yemi Osinbanjo, led a delegation of the Federal Government including the Communications & Digital Economy Minister, Dr. Isa Ali Pantami to a visit to Silicon Valley in 2018 and one of the issues he presented on the table then was how such global tech giants like Facebook could have full representation in the country, including a Nigerian office.

According to the Vice President during the fireside chat on Friday, the focus of the Nigerian government on the digital sector is crucial in the various socio-economic aspects of national life, from education, e-commerce, social investments programmes to the activities of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) of government.
