Gareth Southgate demands education of football fans

Gareth Southgate demands that football fans should be educated on how to avoid racial chants during football matches.

Gareth Southgate had called for the education to end racism in football because there were abusive chants aimed at black England players during his side’s 5-1 Euro 2020 qualifier win against Montenegro. They match took place in Podgorica. European football governing body, UEFA, said they have opened disciplinary proceedings against Montenegro.

By cupping his ears towards the home fans as a sign of defiance, Raheem Sterling celebrated in 5th goal. Callum Hudson-Odoi and Danny Rose had said that they heard monkey noises aimed at them.

Gareth Southgate, the English football coach, said that sanction may not yield the needed results if there is nothing alongside that to educate people.

He further complained that we have to make sure that the education is right for everybody because there is an innocence about young people that is only influenced by older people. This implies that the innocent young people will be better informed to avoid copying wrong attitude from the older ones.

He emphasized his complaint is on a general note because similar thing happens in his country. He lamented that the racist chants had marred England’s big win which leaves England in charge of Group A following two big consecutive wins.

Gareth Southgate told BBC Radio that he wanted to ensure his players feel supported. He asserted that they would report the incidents through the appropriate channel even though so many have heard about it.

UEFA said on Tuesday that disciplinary proceedings had been opened and charges against Montenegro following racist behaviour and crowd disturbances.

Additional sanctions and disciplinary measures may be taken to tackle such conduct according to UEFA’s Article 14.

UEFA regulations state that the club or football association responsible would be punished with a minimum of a partial closure of stadium if their supporters engage in racist behaviour.
