Nearly eight million people in the UK will be living under stricter lockdown rules
UK cases hitting a near 4-month high on Friday as 3,539 were reported means the R number had risen above 1.0 for the first time since March.
Households will be banned from meeting each other in Birmingham, Sandwell, and Solihull in the UK from Tuesday after a rise in coronavirus cases and social gatherings of more than six people will also be banned across England, Wales, and Scotland from Monday. Lanarkshire is also joining areas around Glasgow subject to tougher rules.
Nine new local authorities – Gateshead, Sunderland, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Hertsmere, Liverpool, Knowsley, Sefton, Sheffield, and St Helens have also been added to Public Health England’s watchlist – which could potentially see tougher rules imposed in those areas as well.
Nearly eight million people in the UK will be living under stricter lockdown rules, including a large part of the West Midlands, ahead of a widespread ban on gatherings of more than six people, implying that 1 in 3 people in Scotland and 1 in 10 in England will soon be subject to tougher coronavirus rules.

Areas already dealing with added restrictions include Bolton – which has the worst infection rate in England at 121.9 per 100,000 people – and where rules include restaurants and pubs only being allowed to do takeaways
In England 5.8 million (1 in 10), In Scotland, 1.76 million (1 in 3) and 181,000 (1 in 20) – totaling 7.8 million are set to be under tougher rules in the UK.
Devi Sridhar, Professor in Global Public Health at the University of Edinburgh, told Sky News that it is a turning point in the UK and the solution of getting testing sorted will offer hope in avoiding a spike in cases as devastating as the initial wave earlier this year.
She further described the situation as similar to the situation the UK experienced in February when they weren’t testing to the level we are today, causing a rise in infection cases.
Professor Devi Sridhar hinted that there are now hard decisions for governments on how to introduce measures that are proportionate, which are minimal while ensuring that cases don’t take off again to exponential growth over the coming weeks.
The Professor in Global Public Health added that a “more data-driven, targeted approach” could be achieved through testing, tracing, asking people to change their behaviour, and the use of local restrictions where necessary.
63 authorities in England were over the 20 cases per 100,000 mark in the most recent 7-day period ending 6 September which compares with 14 in the week ending 5 July.
UK cases also hit a near four-month high on Friday as 3,539 were reported – up from 2,919 the day before and 3,497 confirmed cases in the last 24 hours
It followed analysis from the government’s scientific advisory body, SAGE, that the R number had risen above 1.0 for the first time since March.
