Researchers from South Korea have developed electronic tattoo devices to monitor health conditions in Eduonwheels’ today’s Health & Information Communication Technology (ICT) Education News blog of 7 March 2023.
The team at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology has created a nanotech tattoo ink made of liquid metal and carbon nanotubes that effectively functions as a bioelectrode – a health monitoring device, according to the Sky Health & ICT News report.
Unlike traditional tattoos, the e-tattoo ink is non-invasive and doesn’t require a needle to be implanted beneath the skin, but they remain on the skin permanently. Professor Steve Park, the project leader for the e-tattoo research has said, “When it is applied to the skin, even with rubbing the tattoo doesn’t come off, which is not possible with just liquid metal”.

How will e-tattoos are used as health monitoring devices? The Sky Health & ICT News report said revealed that researchers in South Korea are developing a new health monitoring device in the form of an e-tattoo that could monitor one’s health condition in the following ways:

A question like this and other related ones are beginning to gain traction recently after the successful development of the e-tattoos have helped to detect potential health conditions and monitor the state of human health.
The project leader Professor Steve Park has said that they hoped to connect a wireless chip integrated with this ink in the future, so that they could communicate, or can send signal back and forth between human bodies to an external device. This will enhance the process of medical diagnosis and could give a better result.
The researchers plan to do away with the biosensors in the near future and design the e-tattoo as a fully self-contained device.
