NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIAN STUDENTS (NANS) TELLS SOUTH AFRICAN COMPANIES TO LEAVE NIGERIA IN 7 DAYS OVER XENOPHOBIC ATTACKS
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) on Thursday picketed MTN office in Abeokuta; Stanbic IBTC branch, and MultiChoice DSTV in Oke-Ilewo all in Ogun State in protest against frequent xenophobic attacks on Nigerians living in South Africa. The three are branch offices of South African companies operating in Nigeria.
The protesting students were said to have arrived at the MultiChoice DSTV branch and the MTN office in Oke-Ilewo and locked up both offices. Attempts made by the protesting students to lock up the Stanbic IBTC branch in the same area were rebuffed by both the management staff of the bank and security personnel attached to the bank complemented by efforts of some armed policemen in five Hilux vans from Zone 2 Area Command covering Lagos and Ogun States deployed to ensure the protection of lives and property.
Comrade Azeez Adeyemi, the National Public Relations Officer (PRO) of NANS, who led the protesting students, displayed placards with different inscriptions, such as, “South Africans have declared war; Enough is Enough; Nigerian Students can no longer keep quiet while South Africans kill Nigerians and all South African companies must leave Nigeria now among others’’.
Shoprite is another South African company doing business in Nigeria.
One hundred and twenty-seven (127) Nigerians have reportedly been killed over the years due to the xenophobic attacks in South Africa.
The National Association of Nigerian students (NANS) Public Relation Officer (PRO) in addressing newsmen in front of the affected bank said that the Nigerian students’ body could no more fold its arm and watch Nigerians being killed in South Africa through xenophobic attack just like that.
Azeez Adeyemi further said that their action would serve as a deterrent to the South African government over the xenophobic attacks on Nigerians and that the protest will be held in all the states of the Federation.
