Nigerian university union (ASUU) seeks federal lawmakers (National Assembly) to stop kids of government officials from studying abroad

The Nigerian University Academic Staff Union, Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has asked the federal lawmakers in the National Assembly to enact a law preventing government officials from sending their children abroad to study.

 Academic Staff Union, Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke who called Thursday in Abuja at a reconvened meeting with the federal government, by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, said that government officials should be required to enroll their children in Nigerian universities rather than allowing them to study abroad.

 According to him, requiring public office holders to register their kids in public schools in Nigeria will force them to complete challenges in public schools.

Osodeke demanded that the federal lawmakers should legislation in government that will require that if one accepts a government post his or her children must attend universities in Nigeria.

 “The National Assembly must formulate a law that if you make an appointment, your children must study in this country. If you know your children can’t be here, then there’s no need to take a government position.” Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke maintained.

 Speaking about the 2022 budget, Professor Osodeke expressed his disappointment, stating that the education sector had been completely neglected.

 According to him, despite protests from trade unions, no change in the education budget still yet

 “Look at the balance we have seen recently, it is exactly the same thing we have seen. Nothing has changed. And this country pays a high price for neglecting education: the bandits you see, the kidnappings and what you have, it’s because people are not treated.

 “That is why ASUU is fighting, for the state universities in this country to be renovated, so that while our children are studying, other children from other countries will also come here for the same purpose and pay for this country hard currency,” he said.
