FG to harmonize examination dates with exam bodies for other exams tomorrow

The 2020 West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) coordinated by the West African Examination Council (WAEC) will commence on August 17, the Federal Government of Nigeria has declared.

To this end, the Nigerian government has asked secondary schools to reopen on August 4, 2020, for final students in exit classes to sit for the exams.

The government also said students will have only two weeks to prepare for THE 2020 WAEC WASSCE.

These were parts of decisions taken at the end of a virtual consultative meeting between the Federal Ministry of Education, Commissioners of Education of the 36 states of the federation, the Nigerian Union of Teachers, (NUT), the proprietors of private schools and Chief Executives of examination bodies.

In a statement by Ben Goong, the Director, Press and Public Relations of Federal Ministry of Education FMoE, stakeholders at the meeting agreed that the final year exit classes should resume immediately after the Sallah break to enable them to prepare for the exam scheduled to start on August 17 for two weeks.

The meeting also decided on a passionate appeal made to the Federal Government through the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 and public-spirited Nigerians to assist Nigerian schools across the country to have safe reopening and advance the preparations for the examination.

Another statement from the Director, Press and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Education confirmed that another meeting would be convened tomorrow between the Federal Ministry of Education and Chief Executives of examination bodies namely NECO, NABTEB and NBAIS to harmonize their examination dates, would be conveyed to stakeholders expeditiously by the Federal Ministry of Education.

The WAEC WASSCE earlier scheduled to start by April 2020 was suspended indefinitely following the closure of Nigerian schools due to the outbreak of COVID-19.
