Nigerian Federal Government lifts ban on Twitter after 7 months of suspension with conditions

Lift on the ban to help Twitter improve and develop more business models to cover a broader area in Nigeria.

The Nigerian Federal Government has lifted on Twitter, enabling the United States micro-blogging platform to recommence service by midnight from January 13 with the condition that the platform users refrain from promoting divisive, dangerous, and distasteful information.

Nigerians can now have access to the services of the social networking platform, Twitter, following the lift of the ban on its operations in the country.

The ban-lift came after Nigerian Federal Government-led President Muhammadu Buhari approved the ban on suspension of Twitter operations in Nigeria.

The approval was given following a memo written to the President by the Honourable Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof Isa Ali Ibrahim – a memo in which the Minister updated and requested the President’s approval for the lifting based on the Technical Committee Nigeria-Twitter Engagement’s recommendation

A statement by the Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) who is the Technical Committee Chairman on Nigeria/Twitter Engagement, Mallam Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, said Twitter has met all the conditions set by the government.

Mallam Inuwa said the government directed that the decision be communicated to Nigerians.

The NITDA boss said lifting the ban was a deliberate attempt to recalibrate Nigeria’s relationship with Twitter to achieve maximum mutual benefits for both parties.

According to the Technical Committee Chairman on Nigeria/Twitter Engagement, Mallam Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi,, the engagement will help Twitter improve and develop more business models to cover a broader area in Nigeria, but the government warned the platform users to refrain from promoting divisive, dangerous and distasteful information.

It also advised all internet platforms against committing a crime by using a Nigerian Internet Protocol (IP). ”Such offense is synonymous with committing a crime within our jurisdiction,” Inuwa said in the statement reported by The Nation Online

The statement reads in part: “In the memo, the minister updated and requested the President’s approval for the lifting based on the Technical Committee Nigeria-Twitter Engagement’s recommendation.”

He said: “The Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) directs me to inform the public that President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, has approved the lifting of the suspension of Twitter operation in Nigeria effective from 12 am tonight, 13th January 2022.

 The micro-blogging platform, Twitter, has not been accessible to Nigerians since June 4, 2021.
