NUC removes Mass Communication Degree from universities

… spilts into 7 separate degree programmes

Mass Communication was first introduced in UNN in 1971

The National Universities Commission, NUC, has removed Mass Communication Degree from Nigeria universities.

With the development, there will not be Mass Communication as a degree programme in any university in Nigeria.

The NUC said that it had split Mass Communication course into seven separate degree programmes to meet present need with effect from 2020 admissions into Nigerian universities.

Prof. Abubakar Rasheed, The National Universities Commission NUC’s Executive Secretary in a conversation with reporters in Abuja on Thursday, said that Mass Communication had been split into Media Studies, Public Relations Studies, Cinematography, among others.

The seven new Programmes/Departments, to be domiciled in a Faculty / School / College of Communication and Media Studies are Journalism & Media Studies, Public Relations, Advertising, Broadcasting, Film & Multi-Media Studies, Development Communication Studies, and Information & Media Studies.

Before it was scraped off, there were 67 universities in Nigeria accredited by National Universities Commission, NUC offering Mass Communication.

The duration of study of mass communication in any Nigerian university is four years and a graduate of the course earns a Bachelor (BA) Degree in Arts and Social Science.

Mass communication is referred to as the process of creating data, sending and receiving information to a wide audience through available media and analysing the messages through verbal or written media. Mass media can be divided into broadcast media and print media.

It is a social science course offered in universities in Nigeria through the following courses: Mass Media, Journalism, Library and Study Skills, Logic, Philosophy and Human Existence, Literature, World Civilizations, Communication Systems, Culture, Reporting, Announcing and Performance, Public Relations, Film, Peace and Conflict Resolutions, Political Science, Politics and Government, Marketing for Advertising, Information and Communication Technologies, News Writing, Broadcasting, Social Changes and Problems, among others.

University of Nigeria Nsukka, UNN, was the first university in Nigeria to offer Mass Communication in 1971.
