Osinbajo calls for Review of Nigeria’s Higher Education Curriculum

… says Education Should be Employment-driving; capable of solving global problems through innovation, critical thinking, synergizing and collaboration in a global setting.

Vice President of Nigeria, Prof Yemi Osinbajo has called for the review of Nigeria’s higher education curriculum to focus more on technology and creativity, stating that education today must be employment-driving.

Professor Osinbajo, while delivering a lecture on Friday at the 5th Convocation Lecture of the Federal University, Duste, Jigawa State reiterated the need to have a versatile and dynamic higher education curriculum in Nigeria.

The Vice President said the focus should be on innovation, critical thinking, interdisciplinary thinking, design thinking, synergizing and collaboration on a global setting to solve problems, describing future graduates as problem solvers, critical thinkers, and entrepreneurs.

Prof Osinbajo called on education stakeholders – educators, policymakers, schools, universities to adapt their curricula, policies, and projects to improve the skills of learners immediately to enable the graduate dexterously and persistently respond to the ever-changing economy and the workplace as well as challenges of globalization.

He urged the students to see the exciting future ahead and know that the opportunities are limitless.

“There is no question that an exciting future lies ahead, there are breakthroughs in radical technologies, capable of disrupting whole industries, and perhaps even our very conception of work itself.

He further urged higher education institutions to prepare the students for international work, advanced businesses and wealth creation for future sustainability by training them in areas that require improved skills like digital technology (popularly through social media platforms) in order to increase access to opportunities.
