What is the PSAT?

Many students who are not used to PSAT will be asking the question, what is PSAT?

The PSAT stands for Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (Preliminary SAT)

This is a timed standardized test for high school students to prepare them for the SAT (Scholastic Assessment Test or Scholastic Aptitude Test), a standardized test required in many states before attending college. A standardized test is a test that is given to students in a very consistent manner; meaning that the questions on the test are all the same, the time given to each student is the same, and the way in which the test is scored is the same for all students.

Subjects Tested and Durations

What are the different subjects tested and their durations? The test is given over the course of 2 hours and 45 minutes, with 60 minutes for reading, 35 minutes for Writing and Language, and 70 minutes for Math.

According to the College Board website, as reported by The Sun News Media, states in United State (US)  that require the SAT are Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Michigan, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and West Virginia. The PSAT is a general warm-up or practice test for the SAT.

Different Forms of PSAT

There are different forms of the PSAT, given out at different points in one`s student career.

The PSAT 8/9 is given to students in their eighth grade or freshman year of high school. The PSAT 10 is given to students in their sophomore year of high school.  The PSAT/NMSQT stands for the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, and students are able to take this sophomore or junior year. This test can award students a National Merit Scholarship, which in turn will help them pay for future university activities.

According to the Higher Education Council, College Board, which designed the PSAT, PSAT 8/9 serves as the basis for college preparation, the other two versions of the PSAT were used to monitor student progress during high school. PSAT is not required but is often encouraged as a prelude to the SAT or ACT.

How is PSAT assessed?

How is PSAT assessed? The PSAT is assessed in two parts: Reading and Writing and Mathematics. For PSAT 8/9, the score range is 240-1440. PSAT 10 and PSAT/NMSQT have a score range of 320-1520. The total score is calculated by combining reading, writing, and math scores.

There are several benchmarks on which the results are based: 8th graders should earn around 390 in reading and writing and 430 in mathematics, while 8th graders taking PSAT 8/9 should earn around 410 in reading and writing and 450 in mathematics. PSAT 10 and PSAT/NMSQT have different benchmarks, ranging from 430-460 for reading and writing and 480-510 for math.

 According to the College Council, the average PSAT 8/9 score for 2020-2021 is 835 for eighth-graders and 892 for freshmen. The average score on PSAT 10 and PSAT/NMSQT for 2020-2021 is 959 for sophomores and 1044 for boys.

On Wednesday, October 13, 2021, a PSAT was offered to students across America, causing a PSAT trend on Twitter with students using social media to share their experiences.

The three tweets in the blog recorded read:

A tweet simply says “I survived the PSAT”. The second tweet said “every sophomore, junior and their mother after they were released from the PSAT despite their agreement to sign the #PSAT” followed by a photo of the button with a Twitter image on it. Students are expected to keep the test confidential, but it seems that many do not. The last tweet said “Left short answer questions in both math sections of PSAT blank,”
