Salmonella disease outbreak connected to eating onions in on rampage at the moment has caused 652 infections and 129 hospitalizations in about 37 states in the US which have led to recall of imported onions consumed in the country, according to the Chronicle Online.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a food safety alert after hundreds of people, including two in Oregon, a state in the Pacific Northwest region of the Western United States. were diagnosed with Salmonella after eating imported onions.
Fresh red, white, and yellow onions imported from Chihuahua, Mexico, and distributed by ProSource Inc. The onions are sold to restaurants and grocery stores throughout the United States.
ProSource Inc. indicates that the last onion was imported on 27 August, but that imported onions can last up to three months in storage and may still be in homes and businesses.

What is salmonella disease?
Salmonella is the type of bacteria that’s the most frequently reported cause of food-related illness in the United States. You can’t see, smell, or taste it. Illness from these bacteria is officially called salmonellosis. It can cause an upset stomach, diarrhea, fever, and pain, and cramping in your belly.
Signs and Symptoms of Salmonella
- Diarrhea and fever above 102°F
- Diarrhea for more than 3 days that does not improve
- Bloody diarrhea
- Vomiting so hard that you can’t hold fluids
- Symptoms signs of dehydration, such as:
- Not urinating much
- Dry mouth and throat
- Dizziness when standing
- Symptoms of Salmonella
- Most people infected with Salmonella experience diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps.
Symptoms usually begin six hours to six days after ingesting the bacteria.
Though most people recover without treatment after 4-7 days, some people, especially children under 5 years of age, adults 65 years and older, and people with weakened immune systems, may develop a more serious illness that requires medical attention or hospitalization.
Prevention (Precautionary Measures) to avoid contracting Salmonella disease from eating imported onions
This salmonella-causing onion may have a sticker or packaging indicating the brand (ProSource Inc.) and the country (Mexico) where the onion is grown.
People are advised not to buy or eat whole onions, whites, or yellows if imported from Chihuahua, Mexico, and distributed by ProSource Inc.
People should throw away any whole onions, whites, or yellows you have at home that don’t have stickers or packaging on them.
If you don’t know where onions come from, don’t buy them and don’t eat them.
Wash surfaces and containers that these onions may have touched using warm soapy water or in the dishwasher.
Call your doctor right away if you have any of the severe symptoms of salmonella.
