Snapchat is the favourite social media platform among teens in the United States and is still growing in popularity, while Facebook use is minimal among teens, according to a new poll by Piper Sandler, which surveyed 10,000 young Americans with an “average age of 15.8.” many years.
Piper Sandler’s ‘42nd Stock Taking With Teens’ Survey ‘ was conducted between August 17 and September 16 among 10,000 teens in 44 states of the United States. Determining youth social media habits is critical for retailers due to the massive shift from brick-and-mortar sites to e-commerce sites over the past two decades.
According to a recent report from the Bureau of Interactive Advertising, social media advertising spending skyrocketed to $41.5 billion in 2020, an increase of more than 12% year on year, despite the devastating impact of the global pandemic.
In a new survey by Piper Sandler, a Minneapolis-based investment bank, 28% of teenagers buy goods directly from social media sites. More than half (52%) of teens say Amazon is their favourite e-commerce site, but Amazon’s popularity has declined slightly, down four percentage points from the previous survey. SHEIN ranks second in popularity among e-commerce sites with a 9% share, a 4% increase from last year’s number. The teens said their “self-reported” spending increased to $2,274, a 6% year-over-year increase. 9% of adolescents say they have traded.
About 35% of respondents said Snapchat was their favourite app (up from 31% in a Piper Sandler survey earlier this spring), followed by TikTok (30%) and Instagram (22%).
Facebook and Twitter each garnered only 2% of the total number. Teenagers surveyed said they spend an average of 4.2 hours a day on social media.
Snapchat users check the app an average of 30 times a day.
Instagram has the highest engagement rate, with 81% of teens saying they have used the app at least once in the past month, compared to 77% of Snapchat.
