New Social Media Rules: Facebook, WhatsApp, Google, Telegram, LinkedIn, ShareChat, and Koo succumb to India’s pressure

Social Media and Internet giants – Facebook, WhatsApp, Google, Telegram, LinkedIn, ShareChat, and Koo have all succumbed to India’s Social Media and Information Technology (IT) Rules. ShareChat and Koo are Tiger Global-backed Indian startups

Some of the Social Media giants complied fully or partially complied with India’s new Social Media and IT Rules.

India’s new IT rules, unveiled in February 2021, according to a recent tech report, require firms to appoint and share contact details of representatives tasked with compliance, the nodal point of reference, and grievance redressals to address on-ground concerns.

WhatsApp has complied with the aforementioned IT and Social Media Rules, but not with the requirement about the traceability of the originator of messages. WhatsApp said it would have to compromise every user’s privacy to be able to comply with this rule but rather sued the Indian government earlier over the privacy rules.

The compliance to the rules by Facebook, WhatsApp, Google, Telegram, LinkedIn, ShareChat, and Koo is viewed as the desire to maintain market share in India since India is a key overseas market for several technology giants, including Facebook and Google, both of which identify the nation as its biggest market by users.
