The UK to mark 2020 as a disastrous education year for students
UK teachers in England and Wales will be allowed to predict grades for A-level and GCSE pupils. The Government has been under pressure since last Thursday when it emerged that close to 40 percent of A-level results were downgraded from the exam result prediction algorithm.
Gavin Williamson, the Education Secretary, has performed a major reversal and awarded students their predicted grades for both A-levels and GCSEs.

The Education Secretary made the announcement on Monday with the aim to quash a full-scale Tory backbench rebellion he was facing over the situation. More than 25 Conservative MPs, including two ministers, have gone public with their criticism, heaping pressure on the Government to act.
Over the weekend, he said that there would be no adjustment over the algorithm used to calculate this year’s results after exams were canceled due to the coronavirus crisis.
Mr. Williamson, the UK Education Secretary, had persistently ruled out using teachers’ predicted grades, arguing that this would lead to rampant grade inflation and devalue the education qualifications.
The embarrassing climb-down comes after widespread attacks from his colleagues, including frontbenchers. At least three former ministers have written to the education minister, Nick Gibb, calling on him to replace the algorithm, warning that some A-level students would face clear injustice.
Education in the UK seems to have been the third most valued sector compared to the nation’s economy and health. Education is everything. It is the engine of social mobility. The Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, needs to take charge, set out a long term plan for education, and ensure that pupils have a fair exam system for all.
On Sunday, The Telegraph revealed that members of the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (OFQUAL) board now want to ditch their own algorithm, which has been controversially used to calculate results for A-levels and GCSEs.
Robert Halfon, the Tory chairman of the education select committee, said that 2020 would be remembered not just because of coronavirus pandemic but because of the disastrous year that students have had.
