Many Africans have contributed so much in the development of the African continent in many ways which earn them the honour of being included in the list of the most popular persons in the world.

The list of the most influential Africans among the rest on the world, the latest information on the most popular persons in Africa, as released by Time Magazine cuts across people from different walks of life who are making an impact on business, art, sport, music and more across the world.

1. Tony Elumelu

Tony Elumelu tops the list of the most popular African in the world today. Tony Elumelu, who is the current chairman of UBA, is a Nigerian multimillionaire entrepreneur and philanthropist. He founded the Tony Elumelu Foundation in 2010 and also heads an investment company that owns major stakes in power, real estate, and healthcare on the African continent.

He provides seed capital, mentorship, and funding for entrepreneurs to younger African entrepreneurs from different parts of Africa through the Foundation.

With Tony Elumelu’s deep leadership qualities, he was able to revive a distressed commercial bank in Lagos in the late 90s with some other investors into becoming a profit-making company. In 2005, the bank finally merged with United Bank for Africa (UBA). UBA now operates in 20 African countries, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America.

Over 7,000 young aspiring entrepreneurs and business owners have benefitted from Tony Elumelu’s sponsored youth program – a pan-African training and mentorship program he started in 2015. He is committed to investing $5,000 each in 1,000 young entrepreneurs annually across 54 countries on the African continent for the program.

2. Abubacarr Tambadou

Next in the list of the most influential Africans is the 47-year old Abubacarr Tambadou. Abubacarr Tambadou, Gambian prosecutor and former attorney general, served as his country’s attorney general and minister of justice between 2017 and 2020.

Abubacarr Tambadou, with the Gambian government, won an unusual initial ruling against Myanmar and its state counselor where the judges mandated the country to  “ensure”  all violent attacks against the Rohingya were stopped thenceforth.

Tambadou and his government had taken on Aung San Suu Kyi, Myanmar’s state counselor at the International Court of Justice, the UN’s judicial organ, in 2019, over alleged crimes against the Rohingya ethnic group whom United Nations accused of “ethnic cleansing” and committing crimes against humanity such as rape, murder, and torture of over 700,000 Rohingya people.

3. Tomi Adeyemi

The third most influential African is Tomi Adeyemi. Tomi Adeyemi is a 27-year-old Nigerian-American novelist and writing trainer.

Tomi Adeyemi was described by John Boyega, a British actor as ‘a god of ideas’ and as an inspirator of young people. John Boyega wrote in wrote Adeyemi’s tribute, describing her as a creator of the world of actors for all.

Her first book ‘’ Children of Blood and Bone’’ which won the Goodreads Choice Awards for Best Debut Novel remained on the New York Times bestseller list for a record of 90 weeks. Fox 2000 has purchased the film adaptation rights to ‘’Children of Blood and Bone’’. The book was written in 2018.

Another book of hers about the Kingdom of Orisha also won the 2018 Andre Norton Award for Young Adult Science Fiction and Fantasy.

4. Jean-Jacques Muyembe Tamfum

Dr. Jean-Jacques Muyembe Tamfum, a Congolese microbiologist, is the director-general of the National Institute of Biomedical Research in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Dr. Jean-Jacques Muyembe Tamfum worked with the World Health Organization (WHO) team in 1995 that employed the detection and control measures in the first documented Ebola disease outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

He has devoted the last 40 years researching the deadly Ebola virus and implementing its detection and control measures. He is also currently leading the response to Ebola and Covid-19 in Congo.

Dr. Tamfum was among the research team that investigated the first known outbreak of the Ebola virus in 1976.

5. Tunji Funsho

Dr. Tunji Funsho is a Nigerian cardiologist and chairperson of Rotary International’s polio eradication program in Nigeria. He is the last in the list of most popular persons in African.

Dr. Funsho lead immunization efforts in Nigeria getting polio vaccines to millions of children in the country In partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO), the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, UNICEF, and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,.

Through Dr. Tunji Funsho efforts and his team, Nigeria marks its 4th anniversary this year without a case of wild polio – a disease that once disabled 75,000 African children every single year – in the West African country, qualifying her and the African continent as a whole as free from the deadly virus.
