The Trump Media and Technology Group (TMTG) given 30 days to comply with the terms of the software license agreement

The Trump Media and Technology Group (TMTG) has 30 days to comply with the terms of the software license agreement before its access is terminated — forcing it to rebuild the platform or face legal action – The Software Freedom Conservancy (SFC) stating that former President Donald Trump’s new social network violated a free and open-source software licensing agreement by ripping off decentralized social network Mastodon.

Former US President Donald Trump said that he’s launching a new social media blog service, Truth Social, through a newly formed company called Trump Media and Technology Corp. TMTG launched a  fundraising effort 2 days ago for a special-purpose acquisition firm with the promise of building a sprawling media empire following the announcement.

The Software Freedom Conservancy (SFC) says Truth Social does comply with the Licenses and Policy agreements

The only product so far is a social network called Truth Social which seems to branch off a lot from Mastodon. While anyone can freely reuse the Mastodon code (and groups like the far-right social network Gab have done so), they must still comply with the Affero General Public License (or AGPLv3) governing the code, and its terms include offerings. from its source code to all users.

The Verge wrote that Truth Social does not honor this license and, in fact, refers to its service as “owner”. Apparently, the developers attempted to remove references that would have made the Mastodon connection obvious – at one point by listing the “appearance” of the Mastodon logo as a bug – but they did include a direct reference to Mastodon in the site’s underlying HTML along with obvious visual similarities.

SFC policy fellow Bradley Kuhn wrote in a blog post that TMTG’s strategy hasn’t sat well with the SFC, an organization that enforces free and open-source software licenses.

The Software Freedom Conservancy (SFC) while demanding that Trump’s Truth Social must comply with and operate under the same rules of the copyleft licenses that apply to everyone else, hinted that Trump Media and Technology Group ignored those important rules — which were designed for the social good even though The license purposefully treats everyone equally (even people we don’t like or agree with)
