The scientific research of developing and applying new cancer cell therapy to kill cancer cells is yielding promising results in our Weird News blog post of today, Wednesday, January 18, 2023.
From the lab of Khalid Shah, Harvard-affiliated BWH investigators and scientists at Brigham and Women’s Hospital are harnessing a new way to turn cancer cells into potent, anti-cancer agents by developing a new cell therapy approach to eliminate established tumors and inducing long-term immunity, training the immune system so that it can prevent cancer from recurring, according to the Harvard Cancer News US report.
The team tested their dual-action, cancer-killing vaccine in an advanced mouse model of the deadly brain cancer glioblastoma, with promising results, the cancer news report.
How do the researchers intend to use cancer therapy to kill cancer cells?
Researchers took advantage of living tumor cells’ unique ability to travel long distances across the brain to return to the site of their fellow tumor cells and scientists have developed cell therapy engineered to kill and prevent brain cancer in an advanced mouse model.
According to the corresponding author, Khalid Shah, the team is using genetic engineering to repurpose cancer cells to develop a therapeutic model that kills tumor cells and stimulates the immune system to both to destroy primary tumors and prevent cancer.
Khalid Shah, director of the Center for Stem Cell and Translational Immunotherapy and the vice chair of research in the Department of Neurosurgery at the Brigham and faculty at Harvard Medical School and Harvard Stem Cell Institute said, “Our team has pursued a simple idea: to take cancer cells and transform them into cancer killers and vaccines,”
Findings are published in Science Translational Medicine.
