Life-saving COVID-19 drug, Ronapreve, given to President Donald Trump of US to be rolled out in the UK next week

The life-saving COVID-19 drug given to President Donald Trump last year is to be rolled out in the UK for thousands of vulnerable National Health Service (NHS) patients in the UK hospitals.

The life-saving new antibody treatment which is a combination of two monoclonal antibodies called Ronapreve, which was given to former US President Donald Trump, had the potential to benefit thousands of patients, with its roll-out initially targeted at those who have not mounted an antibody response against COVID-19, according to The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) as reported by the media.

Last month, Sajid Javid, the Health Secretary, heralded Ronapreve as the first treatment designed specifically for COVID-19 to receive regulatory approval in the UK.

The health department said that guidance will shortly be going out to clinicians next week so they can begin prescribing the treatment as soon as possible.

“Ronapreve is the first dedicated medicine developed for COVID-19 to receive marketing authorization from the MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency), representing a significant milestone in how the NHS is able to fight this disease,” said Paul McManus, COVID-19 Lead at Roche Products Ltd.

Ronapreve is the first neutralizing antibody medicine specifically designed to treat COVID-19 to be authorized by the MHRA for use in the UK.

The drug will be targeted at people who are immunocompromised, for example, those with certain cancers or autoimmune diseases, and therefore have difficulty building up an antibody response to the virus, either through being exposed to COVID-19 or from vaccination.
